Today’s Activities in Glass

The glass piece that I talked about in my previous post came out of the kiln this morning.  It looked great, except I noticed that there was some devitrification on the Ivory glass.  Devitrification is the growth of crystals on the surface of glass.  I was pretty frustrated, because I have had a couple other glass pieces with devitrification on them.  It can be removed and then put back in the kiln to polish the glass, so it is not a total failure.

Later in the day, I put a basket weave design in the kiln.  I wanted to make a vase with it, so I draped it over a cone-shaped mold.  The kiln is still cooling off, so I won’t be able to take it out until tomorrow.  From peeking through the peep hole, I think it turned out great!

After I put the glass in the kiln, I went down into my basement studio and finished scoring and cutting glass for some glass earrings.  I made a batch of small earrings that I will make into post earrings.  I layered two little pieces of glass, 1/4″ square, and when they are fully fused, they should come out of the kiln nice and round.  I love when that happens.  It sure saves a lot of time grinding each piece until it is round.  Actually, if I had to do that, I wouldn’t do it — just too much work.
